Nothing made me feel less like a rock star than the plastic clattering that sounded like a pre-schooler on riot in Toys'R'Us. I remember spending hours playing Rock Band last year trying to figure out ways to hit the drums without clacking my drum sticks on the raised plastic border around each of the four pads. After seeing just how nice the new drum kit will be for World Tour, complete with velocity-sensitive pads and a more realistic layout that will actually encourage realistic play, it's hard to go back to Rock Band's generic-looking toy pads. After playing Guitar Hero on Hard and Expert for the last couple of years it's a mystifying experience to fiddle around with the Rock Band strum bar, having no idea why some notes register and others don't. The peripherals just don't feel as good to play. Still, for all of Rock Band's creativity and strong concepts, it's just not as fun to play as Guitar Hero. Finally, the emphasis on cooperative play with the addition of drums and karaoke were fantastic concepts that genuinely evolved the Guitar Hero concept into something bigger and more inclusive than it had ever been before. The setlist was, likewise, well-conceived with plenty of contemporary tracks to appeal to everyone in the room, not just the fret-blazing metalheads with the Yngwie Malmsteen box set in their record collection. The art direction did a fantastic job of emulating actual music videos (Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Go With The Flow, off the top of my head) with character models that were cartoons of your average modern-day alt-rocker.
